Final Fantasy XII is a role playing game developed and published by Square-Enix for the PlayStation 2 System. The game was first released back in 2006 (for Japan and North America), and features several game mechanics different from older Final Fantasy titles such as seamless battles (where the player will see the enemies on screen and can strategically engage or avoid the mobs), a gambit system (which allows the player to control the actions each team member might take while engaging in battle), and a license board system for character growth (reminiscence of the Sphere Grid in Final Fantasy X ) which the player has to earn License Points to unlock new abilities, spells, equipments to use etc.
A rehashed Japan-only version of the game, titled Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System, was released in August of 2007. This rehashed release included a revamped growth development system (twelve different job specific license boards instead of the one board with everything a character can learn/unlock in the original game), and bonus content like New Game+, New Game- , and Trial Mode. A high-definition remaster of Final Fantasy XII International Zodiac Job System, titled Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, is scheduled to be released worldwide in 2017 for the PlayStation 4.
Final Fantasy XII is set in the land of Ivalice with its plot focused on the events surrounding the small kingdom of Dalmasca. Situated in the strategic location between the three continents – Valendia, Ordalia, and Kerwon , Dalmasca is home to the descendants of the Dynast-King Raithwall who once united the land.
The game opens with the series of events that took place two years prior to the majority of the storyline within the game, which eventually led to the downfall of Dalmasca. When the game shifts back to present time, the player regains controls and interacts with the game world through Vaan, a seemingly unrelated character, at first glance, to the events of the past. Through various circumstances, Vaan and his childhood friend, Penelo, meet the sky pirate, Balthier, his partner, Fran, the traitor of Dalmasca, Basch, and the princess of Dalmasca herself, Ashe. These chanced meetings eventually let Vaan and Penelo on a journey with Ashe to reclaim the kingdom of Dalmasca from their enemy, the Archadian Empire.
As a Judge under the Archadian Empire, Gabranth is an antagonist established early on in the game and the first Judge to be introduced to the player.
Name: Judge Gabranth
Position: Judge Magister of the 9th Bureau under the Imperial Archadian Ministry of Law
Voice Actors: Ootsuka Akio (JP), Michael E. Rodgers (EN)
From the in-game bestiary1:
Being a member of the Order of Judges of the Imperial Archadian Ministry of Law, and Judge Magister of the 9th Bureau.
The 9th Bureau, led by Gabranth, is primarily concerned with the gathering and dissemination of information. As a result, many of the bureau's activities are shrouded in secrecy.
Gabranth, and his power, are respected by other Judge Magisters, and Emperor Gramis himself places great faith in this younger Judge.
At his introduction, Gabranth appeared as a level-headed leading officer commanding of respect, his full-plate armor only added to his authoritative presence. As the party follow the Judge to escape their imprisonment, Gabranth showed another side of him filled with unresolved anger and hatred towards the man branded as the traitor of Dalmasca. Similar to other prominent characters within Final Fantasy XII, the story of Gabranth is one that unfolds as the player progress through the game.
